A common mistake among companies entering Tanzania is to assume that a good product sells itself. It does not. Tanzanian retail is overwhelmingly informal and fragmented — hundreds of thousands of small shops, kiosks, market stalls and wholesalers, spread across a country larger than most of Western Europe. The brands that win are the ones that can physically and reliably reach them.
The typical chain runs from importer or manufacturer, to a regional wholesaler, to a sub-wholesaler, to the neighbourhood shop, to the consumer. Each layer takes margin and each layer adds reach. Trying to remove all of them is usually a mistake; understanding which layers add value in which regions is the real skill.
In this market, distribution is not a cost of selling the product. It is the product's competitive advantage.
Supermarkets and organised retail chains are expanding in the major cities and will keep doing so. But for the foreseeable future the overwhelming majority of consumer purchases will happen in informal trade. A strategy that serves only formal retail is a strategy that serves a small fraction of the market.
WAHI Trade & Distribution imports, distributes and supplies goods across Tanzania, and represents international manufacturers seeking reliable market access. We offer distributorship arrangements, joint ventures and market-entry support for partners who want their products to reach the shop, not just the port.
If you manufacture something Tanzania needs, the conversation to have is about how it gets to the last mile.
